Background Macrophage-stimulating protein (MSP), also known as Hepatocyte Growth Factor-like Protein (HGFL) and Scatter Factor-2 (SF2), is a member of the HGF family of growth factors. MSP is secreted as a single chain inactive precursor (pro-MSP). In response to injury, pro-MSP is activated by proteolytic cleavage. Activation results in the creation of alpha and beta chains joined by a disulfide bond.
